My four year old and eight year old do not adhere to the concepts of “days off” and “sleeping in”. I’ve been up since o’dark thirty making French toast and sausage for breakfast, and now I’m on oppo until it warms up enough outside to continue work on a new fireplace I’m building. The wind chill is brutal today.

i know what you mean. I have (2) 4 y/o’s. I’ll be making pancakes at 6:30am tomorrow. I think they get up earlier when they know I’m home.

How are you building the fireplace? I have a firepit int he back yard, but I also use landscaping blocks so I end up having to replace it every year. I really want ot invest a little bit in it and do it right one of these times.

it usually pops over the tree tops as I’m heading in. Today it was at that perfect height to shine straight down the highway and into my side mirror , blinding me and probably roasting my eyes into something resembling a burnt marshmallow.

Use a liner of fireplace brick that can take the heat and acidity. Use the landscape brick for the pretty.

When I get out there I’ll post a few more photos. The construction method is just dry stacked dimension stone set into a cut in a slope where my lawn transitions to woods. I removed the top layer of loam and a good bit of the underlying mineral soil, and the largest hearthstones are set in a bed of masonry sand. I enlarged the cut beyond what’s in the photo, but this gives you an idea of where it’s headed.

I have a ton of scavenged largeish rock from my property that I’m using. Gardening in my neighborhood is essentially hard rock mining. In fact, what’s now the left hand side of the fireplace is set directly on bedrock.

I wanted to do a big thing out there to include a pit, patio and benches. I was going to put down a layer of concrete blocks so that the hollow cores would all line up and form something like a concrete tube from behind the benches under the patio and to the bottom of the pit so the fresh air would be coming up from below the fire. I want a taller wall at the front too to block some of the fire from being seen from the road and to reflect more seat to the benches.

Traffic was unusually light this morning, hopefully that means everybody did their traveling last night. I can’t take it if traffic’s any worse than it was yesterday afternoon. 10 mph on an interstate highway when there’s no construction or accidents is something I don’t want to experience two days in a row.

Nope I’m taking time off since my kids are off and I have vacation time to use. But I am awake. Begrudgingly. Because I was up late installing this stupid faucet. Actually installing the faucet was easy. It was getting the old corroded and covered in mountains of plumbers putty one out that took longer than expected. Anyway, looks about normal for most offices on the day before Thanksgiving. Not sure about the Northheast, but down here most white collar folks have Friday off as well so it’s pretty common to take Wednesday off and get a 5 day break from taking just one vacation day.

That’s shitty. I can’t stand when it slows to 50, and the accidents every 3 weeks are annoying, but making a 45 minute commute into an hour and a half for seemingly no reason is too much for me.

The fireplace is all but done. It’s all dry stack, with sand used to stabilize itand fill joints for spark containment. I’m going to lay a limestone patio using the same stone I used for the serving spot, but not this season. The cairn to the left of the pit will also get larger and properly stacked, but not today. Lastly, the fire bed is some crappy sandstone-like sedimentary rock from my property. I just broke it apart with a hammer.
